Look, you haven’t been deceived. This isn’t a trick of the light. The sun has really been out recently. Really really. And of course, we wouldn’t be British if we hadn’t looked up and felt that slight warmth and imagined bangers and burgers sizzling on the coals.
There’s nothing better than firing up the old BBQ when the weather turns. However, before the burgers go on, and before you make all that coleslaw, it’s worth making sure your garden is in the best possible condition for holding such an important event.

If you haven’t got time for an epic overhaul, there are a few simple tweaks that will turn your outdoor space from “it’ll do” into somewhere that people will look forward to spending time with you and your family.

Start with a proper clean

Let’s start with the obvious. The step that most people rush.

Autumn and winter will have left a deluge of leaves, dirt, and all sorts of unsavoury debris. You don’t need to be down on your hands and knees scrubbing, not when a quick jetwash on patios, paths, and decking will instantly freshen the space and make a real difference.

Check your patio or seating area

So people will want to sit down. Your elderly relatives will rarely leave the seating area, and when it’s time for you to bring out that beat up old acoustic guitar, you’re also going to want to perch somewhere.

If your seating area consists of loose slabs, uneven ground, or tire paving, now is the time to get it sorted. Not only will it look better, but it will also make the space safer and more comfortable for your guests.

Even small fixes can make your garden feel more “finished.”

Think about layout

Of course, where you place your BBQ matters. It matters more than a lot of people think.

Keep it:

• Away from walls and fences
• Close enough to your seating area to stay social
• On a solid, level surface

It sounds like common sense, and it sounds really simple, but it’s easy to overlook when you’re worried about where you are going to put the beer pong table.
Outdoor Lighting

Add simple touches

You could have a full makeover. You could haul in fence panels, gates, and astro turf if you want. But it probably isn’t necessary to do more than add a few simple touches:

• Outdoor lighting for the evening
• A few planters or greenery
• Clean, comfortable seating

These small details make a big impact.

Don’t ignore the basics

Realistically it’s more important to check on the things that make a difference. Don’t ask: “Will cousin Bernard rub it in that he has a working bar in his garden?” Instead ask “Is my BBQ clean and working properly?”

There’s nothing worse than finding three broken chairs, and a big black dusty bowl that once resembled a BBQ.

It’s not about breaking the bank

Getting your garden BBQ-ready isn’t about spending loads—it’s about getting the basics right.
A clean, level, well-laid space will always beat something rushed or unfinished.

And if your patio or garden needs more than a quick fix, getting it sorted properly now means you’ll enjoy it all summer without worrying about it.
